Highlights
In July, WFP assisted 686,597 people: 639,540 Syrian refugees, 19,584 Palestinian refugees from Syria, 265 Lebanese and Syrians through livelihood activities. 27,208 vulnerable Lebanese were assisted through the Government of Lebanon’s National Poverty Targeting Programme (NPTP).
Preliminary results of the 2016 “Vulnerability Assessment of Syrian Refugees” highlight sustained food insecurity among refugees.
The #ShareTheMeal campaign ended after raising an additional USD 500,000.
Operational Updates
WFP’s school meals programme paused for summer holidays and will resume in October.
Since 2012, WFP has directly injected USD 721 million into the Lebanese economy through the ecard programme.
WFP continues to implement its shop selection component of the retail strategy. By the end of July, 300 existing and potential shops were visited and assessed by WFP for their suitability within the programme. The retail strategy aims to maximise purchasing power of Syrian refugees.
Preliminary results following data analysis for the 2016 “Vulnerability Assessment of Syrian Refugees” (VASyR) indicate that:
70.5 percent of Syrian refugees live below the poverty line;
52.2 percent live below the survival minimum expenditure basket;
7 percent are food secure; and - 75 percent are employing emergency and crisis coping strategies to cope with lack of food or money to buy food.
The final results of the 2016 VASyR will be shared by October, 2016.
