Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has launched a new project to deliver clean drinking water to the local communities inside Syria, at a total cost pf $179,000 (QR 651,170).
During the first phase, QRC's office in Turkey purchased four large water tanks to provide drinking water to civilians in Syria.
Generally, water facilities and networks have been destroyed due to the four-year Syrian crisis. There are no official authorities to secure drinking water for households and public utilities.
Amid the siege of most northern areas of the country, the local communities are almost facing a humanitarian disaster in water supply, to be added to the insecurity and loss of sources of income.
In an attempt to alleviate their suffering, QRC's staff in Turkey made a situation assessment and outlined a practical solution.
As a first step, four water tanks were purchased and entered into Aleppo city and countryside and Idlib countryside, under the supervision of a separate team for each tank.
Over 13 days, the water management in Aleppo received three tanks to deliver 1.17 million liters of clean water to 40 districts. Yet, the needs are much higher. Additional eight tanks are required to wholly cover the 500,000-people city of Aleppo.
In parallel, QRC's mission in Lebanon relieved two Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon, which were damaged by fire due to lack of safety standards.
Once the fire incidents were reported, QRC staff moved promptly to assess the situation and interview the victims.
The staff was informed that the fire was caused by some gas leak in a tent, where a housewife was cooking, and then, the other poorly-made tents quickly caught the fire.
Financial aid was given to the affected families to help them secure their basic needs, and new infrastructure was built in the camps as a permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future.
