Objective:
To improve the food security and nutrition of vulnerable households affected by the Syrian crisis while protecting and gradually restoring agriculture-based livelihoods.
Key partners:
Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in the Syrian Arab Republic, Ministry of Agriculture in Lebanon and the International Organization for Migration.
Beneficiaries reached:
14 850 households.
Activities implemented:
Distributed winter vegetable seed packages to 9 000 households and spring and summer packages to 3 350 households in the Syrian Arab Republic.
Trained 1 374 people, of which 1 282 were women, in the Syrian Arab Republic on good agricultural practices for backyard vegetable production and marketing.
Distributed bread making and food transformation kits to 500 returning Lebanese households.
Undertook a multi-disciplinary scoping mission to Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey to assess the impacts of the influx of Syrian refugees on agricultural livelihoods and natural resources as well as identified ways to strengthen institutional capacities and provide policy advice to address water-energy-food challenges.
Impact:
Strengthened food production capacities, dietary diversity and income of 12 350 vulnerable Syrian households in seven governorates through the provision of winter, spring and summer packages.
Enhanced Lebanese returnees’ income generation through increased opportunities in bread making, food preservation and marketing.
Supported the improvement of Syrians’ production capacities through trainings on the importance of home gardening, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, good agricultural practices, food processing and preserving, organic fertilizers (compost making at home) and pest and disease management.
Improved the quality and hygiene of food handling and processing through the provision of food processing and preservation kits.
