Introduction
The European Union Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian crisis, the “Madad” Fund, aims to address the longer term economic, educational and social needs of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, as well as helping overstretched host communities.
Palestinian refugees from Syria (PRS) are among those particularly affected by the conflict. Over 120,000 PRS have fled the country, including around 31,533 to Lebanon, as of June 2018. Twice displaced, PRS are particularly vulnerable and highly reliant on UNRWA’s assistance. More than 90% of PRS are living under the poverty line and almost 95% of PRS households are food insecure.
In Lebanon, the EUTF Madad contributed 14.4 million EUR to the project ‘Maintaining the Resilience of Palestine Refugees from Syria in Jordan and Lebanon’. Through this project, UNRWA aims to strengthen the resilience of Palestine refugees affected by the crisis through the provision of equitable and inclusive quality education services, protection services for individuals at risk, and the provision of multi-purpose cash assistance so that refugees can meet their most basic needs.
