Lebanon: This is just what we needed

Source: Norwegian People's Aid
Country: Lebanon, Syrian Arab Republic

Aid is rarely provided to single women like Leila (34). Her fridge was almost empty when she received food vouchers from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) partner organization in Libanon.

In Syria Leila had her office job and her own money. In Nahr EL Bared camp in Lebanon she lives in a small one-room house. Her three younger brothers have joined her.

“When I first got here I had nothing. Just a small suitcase,” she says.

“At first no one would help me because I was a single woman living on my own. Aid is usually prioritized to larger families,” she explains.

Some good willing people helped her and she got a few pieces of small furniture. Leila and her brothers now also receive 103 American dollars a month from The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). She shyly states that women’s sanitary needs often are costly. When NPA’s partner Najdeh Association handed her food vouchers her fridge was practically empty.

“This is just what we needed. We are very low on food supplies,” Leila says.

Part of the money raised during the Refugee Appeal in Norway, will go to the important work of Norwegian People's Aid in cooperation with Najdeh Association. This means that Syrian refugees like Leila will continue to receive assistance.
