Lebanon: ECHO Factsheet – Lebanon: Syria crisis – June 2015

Source: European Commission Humanitarian Aid department
Country: Lebanon, Syrian Arab Republic

Key messages

  • Lebanon is the neighbouring country hardest hit by the Syria crisis, hosting more than 1.1 million Syrian refugees, which combined with the other refugee communities in the country make it the world’s largest number of refugees per capita.

  • Access to the Lebanese territory for those fleeing the conflict in Syria has become close to impossible since the enforcement strict regulations by the Government of Lebanon.

  • The unaffordable fees and complicated administrative procedures for refugees to renew their legal residence (including the ban of working) in the country are pushing an increasing number of refugees into becoming undocumented which raises concerns over their ability to move and access services and exposes them to abuse and harassment.

  • The European Commission commends Lebanon’s generosity and is committed to continue its support to the government of Lebanon and the humanitarian community in providing assistance to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese. Since the beginning of the crisis the European Commission alone has allocated almost €487 million n assistance, including more than €209.1 million from the humanitarian budget.
